Tonight, Wilf was talking to me about a parent-teacher interview he had last week. Talk about a culture gap: this was a chasm. The parent's been here for at least 10 years, but his thinking is still stuck in the Old Country, a part of the planet where women and children are best neither seen nor heard.
His son's not doing his homework. Dear old Dad's solution? "Just hit him." (Wilf does this, he gets fired REAL quick.) "OK, I *give* you permission to hit him." (Same result: Wilf would get fired, with the same speed, Warp 9.) "OK, *I* hit him. Come over here." Wilf now is struggling to get through to him that if Daddykins wallops his pride and joy as he's threatening to, Wilf has no legal choice whatsoever than to report him to both the cops and Children's Aid. It is apparently quite the struggle to communicate this concept, as the Dad has nothing but contempt for laws preventing using your kid as a punching bag when he misbehaves, and for anyone who would actually follow such obviously foolish laws. Why, it's almost as rediculous as having MUSIC in schools!! Not allowed where he comes from.
As I said, this guy has been in Canada for at least a decade - his son is 11 and was born here - yet he hasn't clued in that most of us Canadians take a very dim view of using physical violence to discipline your kids. Kind of explains where Farrah Khan's parents' thinking comes from. I'm supposed to be non-judgmental, but tough. I think that father's attitude is sick.

Another tale of the sick society we live in today: It seems that the three kids who killed that 12-year old kid Johnathan a few blocks from where I live were in court today. Their friends came out to support them, and when one was ordered to leave, he shoved a court officer. Nice "friends", brains of a guinea pig. Fortunately, the one doing the assaulting discovered the cops and court officers take as dim a view as I do on this subject, and was swarmed by a couple dozen of them and hauled off to face assault charges. >_<
