3-alarm fire
Sep. 20th, 2007 02:53 pmFirst of all, it's located south and east of Victoria Park and Danforth, and I'm north and west of that intersection, so I'm sort of safe. Security has been on the annunciator and told the entire complex to keep our windows and balcony doors closed.
The situation: A wrecker's is on fire at Thora. (For those of you who are at least somewhat familiar with the area, it's where the local liquor store is.) Three alarms (update: now FIVE alarms), which is quite a significant crew. The fire alarm came in at about 1:50, reporting explosions and quite the incredible smell.
With a wrecker's you get all kinds of nastiness: Tires, gasoline, transmission fluids, seat fabrics, possibly even paint. So Toronto Fire has got their Hazmat unit out there too.
No reports of any injuries, but it's early yet. Please let it stay this way.
It's having impacts beyond the site: GO Transit's Lakeshore East commuter train is suspended until further notice, with trains holding at Danforth and Scarborough stations for at least half an hour now. Those commuter trains carry hundreds of thousands of commuters during rush-hour, so if this is still going in about an hour, it's going to have significant impact on the downtown core. The smoke is so bad, they're now talking about it impacting Pearson Airport, which is on the far side of Toronto from this fire. This may also impact subway traffic, although so far not yet. TTC is reporting that traffic on the Danforh is stop-and-stop and they're diverting their buses.
With a 5 alarm fire Toronto Fire sends:
15 pumpers
5 ladder trucks
5 platoon chiefs
1 divison chief
2 air supply vehicles
1 Hazmat
(and lots more stuff)
