Nov. 15th, 2007 06:35 pmI got an e-mail from my Dad yesterday morning. His sister, my Aunt Hazel, has passed away. She was his older sister.
She spent something like 18+ days in the hospital (any of you familiar with the Canadian medical system will share with me my astonishment that they were willing to keep a patient in that long; financial incentives built into our universal health care system encourages hospitals to disgorge the not-quite-ready into the loving arms of their next of kin, or failing that their empty apartments, in an obscenely brief period of time). The nurses couldn't do enough for her, and the doctors' pain management was light-years ahead of where it was just a decade ago. They let the nurses call it, if the patient needed another shot, she got one, up to a borderline-overdose limit.
