In an effort to find out why GAIM, my instant messenger, had stopped its "you have a message" sound (I'm not sure when I accidentally shut it off...), I turned on ALL SYSTEM SOUNDS on KDE. Now, whenever I minimize or maximize an application, there is this pleasant two-note piccolo sound. Sumomo's still trying to figure out where the sound is coming from.
