I sincerely hope that none of my friends bought tunes from Microsoft's now-defunct MSN Music store. They're pulling down the DRM servers at the end of this summer, meaning that their customers have a choice, "commit to which computers (and OS) they want to authorize forever, or give up access to the music they paid for".

Reminds me of those times when the Windows Genuine (dis)Advantage servers went down, threatening millions of Windows Vista and XP users with loss of their software.

Also under the list of actions guaranteed to "win friends and influence people", we have Microsoft's new Office subscription service, code-named Albany (linked to some of the planet's most exclusive and pricey ladies of the evening, but I suspect that's just a co-incidence.) If you don't pay your subscription dues, they trigger a kill switch, reducing your functionality to read-only. You won't be able to create new documents or edit your own documents. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what the Open Document Format is all about - perpetual access to your own documents.
