I have a couple of [livejournal.com profile] ginny_t's spoilerdragons over for tea (did you know the one with the white wings liked Earl Grey, while the one who paints her dewclaws prefers Irish Breakfast tea?) so I shall hide the rest of this post .

Lesson 212 is finally out. At the end, Yue seems to have finally recovered her memories - and as it turns out, as long as her memories were gone, her Pactio card was white. The picture gradually returned, and her ability to focus magic from Negi was regained, as her memory returned. Now with the education she's had at that academy, she should really be sharp.

Now for the speculation bits: When they saw Yue call forth her artifacts, her fellow students and the teachers realized that not only does Yue have a pactio card, it's a very rare, very special kind of pactio card: an artifact card, which is only given to special individuals. And here Negi has been giving the damned things out to the girls in his class like they were candy. Something like a third of the class have pactio cards now, and all seem to be artifact cards.

Plus that, as Negima has continued, we're seeing his magical power level rise to insane levels. He had to struggle to support Asuna at first when she was the only one who had a pactio with him; now he's got closing on to a third of the class, and they can all be using theirs simultaneously and don't need him to consciously transfer magical power. Which leaves me to wonder - is that a case of them tapping his power, as they did at first, or is this a case of them tapping their own previously unknown power?

Either it's Negi who is so special, or there's something going on with that class of his (and I'm not discounting "both"). The more this series goes on, the more convinced I am that most of the girls (except those "different" ones like Evangeline, Chachamaru, Princess Asuna and the ghost-girl) are daughters of mages, not just the Four Athletes and Konoka.

Feel free to poke holes in my theory, expand on it, or contribute your own thoughts.

No, I'm fairly sure that all 31 girls in that class are in that class for a reason. I don't think there are any 'normal' girls. Even some that we see as mostly typical have talents, such as Sakurako's luck. We see Makie (who has somehow gotten a beginner's wand) has aptitude at the end of the chapter, and I'm pretty sure the scar on Ako's back will eventually tie into something plot-related as well.

And let's not even get into Zazie. :D I don't know if they're all descended from mages, but they're all there as they have natural magical aptitude.

There are, in fact, very few 'normal' girls still left - i.e. girls who haven't exhibited any unnatural trait in some way. Misa and Madoka, the twins, Ayaka (and I'm sure we'll see more with her later), Natsumi (ditto), Akira (being really good at swimming doesn't count), and Chizuru and Satsuki (being very strong-willed also doesn't count).

I note Yue also got an alternate outfit powerup - good thing Konoka mentioned it 30 chapters ago, or we'd be wondering. :)

Zazie's definitely Not Normal. No way in HELL is Zazie "normal". Her friends even scare Sayo, who has been dead for some 70 years or so.

As far as Makie, she's one of the Athletic Four (Makie, Akira, Ako and Sakurako), who if speculation is correct are all daughters of mages. We know one definitely is (Akashi Yuna, basketball player and daughter of the definitely magical Akashi-Sensei). Plus, when they were dropped into the Magical World (the fact that they were in the first place is an indication that all four have some magical ability) they accepted it pretty damned fast.

By the way, I think Ako's scar comes from the Wars, and may also explain why so few of the girls know about the Magical World... at least, in the early days of Negi's teaching career.

Ayaka is going to be magical, I'm sure: first, being into the Equestrian Club means she's athletic (which seems to go along with the magical ability: see Misora, who is in the Track and Field club) plus it's her father's company which EVERY YEAR sponsors the annual festival's closing event. I forget about the manga on this point, but in the anime she's also a Black Belt.

There are at least four who don't have magical talents demonstrated yet and therefore may not have any, but who have knowledge of the magical world:
- Ku Fei, the multiple marshal arts master
- Hakase Satome, the professor-to-be (which would make her Hakase-Hakase)
- Yotsuba Satsuke, the Iron Chef who speaks without speech balloons
- Nagase Kaede, ninja girl
If my speculation that physical strength == magical power, then Ku Fei and Kaede could also prove to be potentially powerful mages, unless in Akamatsu-sensei's universe just being insanely strong does not necessarily translate into having magical talents.

That basically leaves Ayaka, two of the Cheerleading Club members (Misa and Madoka), the twins Fuka and Fumika, Chizuru and Natsumi who have demonstrated no magical talents nor any knowledge of the magical world.

As an aside, from what Chisame says during her battle with Chachamaru, I'd say the Mage-Net is running Linux. IP Tables, anyone?

In addition: none of the other teachers overseeing him at Mahora Academy (or even Madoka's father) seem to be particularly upset that so many of the girls have a pactio with him.

That reinforces what you say about "none of the 31" being ordinary. A few could be, but chances are... ahhh, no.

And I meant Konoka's father, head of the Kansai Magic Association, likewise doesn't seem upset at having so many girls with Negi knowing magic.

Don't you just order it from the Replicator, like I do? It works for me! ^_^

I disabled "Tea, Earl Grey, hot". I dislike Earl Grey tea just that much. *hangs head* ('Sides, replicator tea is nothing compared to the real thing!)
