Jul. 1st, 2008 12:08 amTo my surprise, I received a small package in the mail today - a CD from a company known as Canonical. I ordered it from them about two weeks ago, which is very good timing indeed, especially as it wasn't promised to arrive here for another four weeks, and even more especially as it went by Regular Post from the Isle of Man.
To be more specific, it is Kubuntu, a flavour of Linux: Ubuntu with the KDE graphical user interface.
I know, I know, I bore the living daylights out of a number of my friends when I discuss things computer, but this is of definite interest to a handful of you. This little guy from overseas (net stated value, .88 of a Euro) is going to help me try to resurrect an ancient Pentium II computer currently being not-utilized at the Waterloo Regional Dream Centre. They are poor, and can definitely use the additional computer for something-or-other. Computer in question is currently using the monstrously inappropriate (due to its monstrous requirement for system resources) Windows XP.
I suspect I know which silly git installed WinXP on such an ancient piece of hardware. The effect is not unlike trying to install Windows 98 on a Commodore 64 - it's just not built to take it.
The plan is to shove this disk into the hard drive and try it out (it's a "live" disk - you don't need to install it at all to run it). If it works, I'll install it on the machine and for faster service, install the X Desktop Environment, which is a real lightweight.
Wish me luck.
