Explosion and Fire
Jul. 20th, 2008 02:11 pmFor those of you just catching the news about the explosion and fire in the Dawes & Danforth area: Yes, I did indeed have a front-row seat for the fire, although it was about 3 blocks away. You could draw a straight line from my living room window through the right-hand apartment building on the other side of Crescent Town Road to the 21-storey tower beyond it.
For those of you I just gave a heart attack to, the apartment building is on the far side of Dawes Road from me, so I'm OK. I wish I could say the same for 6 firefighters and 1 civilian who have been taken to hospital. I don't know about the civilian, but the firefighters are suffering from second degree burns and smoke inhalation.
Initial reports are that a transformer go boom big time. Transformer was either on the 1st floor or basement of the tower.
Fire is "under control" (which is firefighterese for "still burning"), and the firefighters are going floor-to-floor evacuating tenants, figuring keeping them in their units pending rescue would be far safer than the logjam of having everyone trying to get the hell out at the same time.
It's a five-alarm fire, which is the same as the paint store fire on Queen last year and only one less than the fire on Richmond that destroyed that city block of homes and businesses including the bicycle store.
