Spam, eggs, sausages and spam...
Aug. 9th, 2008 09:49 pmI've been getting a tremendous amount of e-mail in the past 12 hours, so far 22 and counting. No, it's not spam, it's suggestions on the GTA Linux Users Group mailing list about how to help one of our members who is getting deluged with e-mail.
The e-mail he's getting deluged with isn't spam either. They're the result of spam. He's getting about 500 messages a day over the last 3 days: bounce-back notices, "This e-mail address isn't valid."
Thing is, he's not the one sending the original message in his name. His address is the one being spoofed by a botnet of about 500 compromised Windows boxen.
And so far, everyone is saying variations of, "Not a whole heck of a lot you can do about this."
The FBI is fighting it as best they can, in an effort dubbed Operation Bot Roast. Whichever FBI agent came up with that name deserves an award. ^_^
